Heard Over Sandcastles

At the yearly Cannon Beach Sandcastle Day, I decided against the art of photography. Sandcastles being one of the most commonplace forms of transient art, I instead listened closely to what would have slipped away in the (prevalent) wind:

Moiré patterns: textiles, wallpaper, nature / colors, patterns, and designs

I am drawn to bold colors, patterns, and designs. My inspiration comes from many sources, from textiles to wallpaper to forms found in nature, as well as shapes and patterns found in architecture and tile-work. Recently, I have been making spiral paintings. By overlapping several spirals, I create moiré patterns, as waves of color collide. The optical effects create movement on the canvas, and play tricks on your eyes.

Spring in Baghdad saw stadiums open to shelter yet another wave of refugees, displaced from the capital’s eastern slums by the combined assault of the US military and its proxy Iraqi forces upon the Mahdi Army loyal to the young Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr. The fresh attempt to “root out” the Mahdi Army from its birthplace of Sadr City was the latest battle in Iraq’s complex and ever shifting civil war—a war in which the US military, in a sense, is but the largest and most heavily armored militia.
