Resistance is Fertile: Submit to Caterwaul Quarterly

Caterwaul Quarterly is a web-based collective, which aims to create a forum for engagement with the world from a variety of angles. CQ features critical analysis, reflection, and expression on politics, science, and the arts.

We accept submissions of essays and articles on anything from politics to science, along with works of art and creative writing, on a rolling basis. A DIY collective in the purest sense, no one at Caterwaul Quarterly gets paid. As a result, we are unable at this time offer remuneration for published pieces.

Selections are made by the pertinent section (Politics & Society, Arts & Culture, Literature and Popular Science). After acknowledgment of initial receipt, an editorial decision will be made within two months. More details on section guidelines can be found below.

Published works are all licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Non-commercial Share Alike (by-nc-sa) license. More information can be found here.

Selections are made by the pertinent editorial collective (Politics & Society, Arts & Culture, Literature and Popular Science). We will get back to you within one week acknowledging receipt of a submission and will decide on your submission within two months.

All submissions should include a 1-3 sentence bio.

Each of our four editorial collectives has particular submission guidelines. Please peruse them below.

Politics & Society Submission Guidelines:

Caterwaul Quarterly invites submissions of articles on politics and society, broadly conceived. We publish essays, criticism, narrative journalism, non-academic research, and would probably be open to other genres as well. Our enemy is conventional wisdom. Our subject matter is highly eclectic. We are less interested in channeling a particular style or political viewpoint than in critical engagement expressed through thoughtful prose. We especially appreciate articles on topics and issues which are undercovered by mainstream media sources, those that were highly covered and subsequently forgotten, and those which are deeply misunderstood because they receive so much mainstream coverage.

Submissions should generally be between 500-2000 words. Please email a pitch or summary first to politicsubmit@gmail.com

Arts & Culture

Caterwaul Quarterly is looking for artists, illustrators, and commentators.

We are looking for one-time contributors of visual art of any kind that can be published or represented in a magazine. We are also looking for articles of 1,000-2,000 words about art past, present and future. Furthermore we are looking for illustrators and collaborators who we can contact to illustrate or otherwise illuminate specific articles and literature in this and other departments. So, to that effect, please submit images, links to videos, music, and articles for publication, or a representative selection (5-10 pieces) of your work and a short and helpful description of your artistic capabilities.

Please send us images 300dpi or 2500x1167 pixels in size.

Literature

Caterwaul Quarterly is looking for creative and non-creative literary contributions!

We are interested in anything you have to say through or about literature: we will accept fictional texts of any genre as well as the reflections and criticism these inspire. We offer no thematic constraints; our request is simply for creative subversions of all kinds--against the page, the reader, ourselves and you.

We are looking for works in diverse formats and of various lengths, but propose a general guideline of no more than ~2,500 words (or about 8 double-spaced pages). To enter a submission, email textcollective@gmail.com with the subject heading SUBMISSION.

Popular Science

Caterwaul Quarterly welcomes articles on Science and Technology that address contemporary issues facing the scientific community and the human dilemmas that ensue. Our hope is to raise awareness among our readers about the challenges and advances in science that may require some translation for a lay audience to fully engage. Articles should be informative but not overstuffed and approachable by any reader. Please limit submissions to 2000 words or less.
